Organic Products Western Cape | The Farms
Situated near Clanwilliam in the greater Cederberg region of the Cape Floral Kingdom , about 200km north of Cape Town , are the farms Waterval, Bovlei and Witelskloof. The species-rich principal vegetation type of the kingdom, known as Fynbos, includes Rooibos and Buchu, both of which are endemic to the Cederberg region. Both also occur naturally at these farms in the slopes of the Skimmelberg Mountain , so named after the dapple-grey appearance of its rock-strewn peak.
For the better part of a hundred years buchu has been harvested in the wild, originally being carted down the mountain in bags by donkeys. Buchu was more recently joined by Rooibos as a crop when it became popular early in the first half of the last century.
Today both Buchu and Rooibos are cultivated on these farms in a sustainable way to ensure an adequate supply, thus protecting it from over-exploitation in the wild.
