News highlights from Cape Town City Council Meeting of 30 July 2007
*Final building plan approval for 2010 stadium at Green Point
*Ward forums will be more inclusive
Revised building plans for the Green Point multi-purpose stadium for the 2010 Soccer World Cup were approved by the City of Cape Town at a special council meeting held today (30 July 2007). This is a major milestone in the project.
This follows the rezoning of the land in Fritz Sonnenberg Road, Green Point, and the obtaining of environmental authorisation for the development.
The original building plans were advertised for comment during January and February 2007. In the interim, the design of the stadium was revised to reduce the overall building size and height to meet the available budget. The 68 000 seating capacity remained unchanged.
The revised building plans were advertised during May and June 2007, and additional objections were received by the closing date of 7 June 2007. The plans have also been circulated to the relevant City departments for comment.
“Until now, the foundations of the stadium have been under construction on the basis of two provisional building plan authorisations. The City followed this route to make sure it remained legally compliant as the construction progressed. We have stayed within these authorisations at all times,” said Executive Mayor, Helen Zille.
“The High Court case set down for 13 August to hear the challenge against the stadium by Cape Town Environmental Protection Association (CEPA), has had to be postponed because of the scope and complexity of the case.
Mike Marsden, Executive Director for Service Delivery Integration and responsible for 2010 in the City said: "The City is confident that it had answered all CEPA’s arguments in a comprehensive way. Because of pressing time constraints the construction of the stadium will proceed to programme."

WARD FORUMS WILL BE MORE INCLUSIVE
Religious and educational institutions, as well as close corporations, will now also be able to participate in the City of Cape Town’s new ward forums. The City Council has now amended its rules for the election of ward forums, which previously excluded institutions that by their very nature were not able to comply with the requirements of having had an annual general meeting within the past 18 months.MEDIA QUERIES: Irwin Robson 084 560 2162
