Cape Town Renaming Process in Second Phase

Recent Company News

The convenor of the re-naming process, Councillor Owen Kinahan, says he is pleased with the response to the initiative which began on 23 April. Advertisements were placed calling on residents to submit proposals to rename streets, public places, natural areas and Council-owned buildings, facilities and artefacts in the City of Cape Town.

After a public participation process, a panel of experts was appointed by the City to evaluate the proposals submitted. The panel is chaired by human rights activist Rhoda Kadalie. The names of the 16 other members are available on the City website, www.capetown.gov.za/renaming.

By the time the window period for proposal submission closed on 11 May, 238 proposals were received from about 50 different individuals and organisations.

Kinahan said they reflected thoughtful submissions that included pre-colonial, Dutch colonial and liberation era ideas as well as literary references. Nearly all the suggestions were for the names of people rather than events, fauna, flora and other categories which the City’s policy also encouraged.

After due deliberation by the panel of experts, their recommended proposals served before Mayco on 20 June.

The proposed 39 name changes are being made public in a series of newspaper advertisements and further comment is being called for.

Residents are invited to comment on the proposals accepted by the panel of experts and can do so either via the City’s website, www.capetown.gov.za, or by way of the official forms which are available at the 23 subcouncil offices. The forms are available in English, Afrikaans and Xhosa. Those who wish to comment have until 22 August to do so.

The full Council must take the final decision on whether to accept the implementation of the proposed renaming.
