Weddding Toasts - What to Say and When to Say it

The sound of silverware tapping against a champagne glass at a wedding does not take long to have everyone in attendance stopping their conversations, turning their bodies in their chairs and directing their eyes towards the source of the sound.

Toasting is a tradition at weddings, the only questions tend to be if any of the people toasting will drift onto inappropriate subjects, will they take a long time, who are the people who will be saying the toast and in what order?

It is important to answer these questions before the reception arrives, inform those toasting to stay within a certain time frame, and if you are one of those up to toast the happy couple then you should make sure that you have a few things to say that you have prepared...

Getting It Right With A Wedding Toast
By: Wade Robins

If you are taking part in a wedding, then may want to consider what you will say for a wedding toast. A wedding toast is not the same thing as a wedding speech. The bride or groom’s father or the best man traditionally gives a wedding speech. A wedding toast is much shorter than a wedding speech and can be given by anyone present at the wedding reception. However, it is most expected out of these two people. If you are the bride or groom's father or the best man, then you should take the time to consider what you will say for a wedding toast.

The best thing that you can do to prepare to give a wedding toast is to know what you will say beforehand. Usually something sweet or lighthearted is the way to go for a wedding toast. A wedding toasts should not be a long speech issues, but should be the quick and to the point. Usually three to four minutes is the perfect time for a wedding toast. A toast should make everybody at the reception feel excited for the new couple's life together.

There are many “rules” to wedding toasts, and it is to the discretion of the bride and groom whether or not they want to follow traditional wedding etiquette. For example, traditionally at the actual wedding reception, the best man should be prepared to give a wedding toast, on behalf of the bride and groom. Then he groom is expected to give a wedding toast to his new wife and to her family. After that, it is traditionally acceptable for the two fathers to give a wedding toast to the new couple. This can also include stepfathers. Last of all, the bride and groom will toast one another. With all the testing going around at a wedding reception is easy to see why many people feel unprepared when their time comes. Take some time to research some fun and lighthearted wedding toasts quotes that you can use at a wedding reception. Of course, you may not be at a loss for words and you may know exactly what you want to say. Take the time to write your words down and keep them handy on a small note card. Just in case, you get emotional, and forget what you were supposed to say. This is especially true for the fathers and the bride and groom.

Another great tip when it comes to giving a wedding toast is that you can be humorous, but do not be mean and do not tell jokes that only a handful of people will understand. Above all, try not to embarrass the bride and groom on their special day.

It's quite simple really, the toast is the time for a couple of sentences that will put your opinion of the newlyweds in a nutshell, maybe fit a clean joke in, and wish them well on their union. What toast is not is the time to pull out the prepared speech from your jacket pocket and have the guests waving down waiters for new bottles of wine while they wait for you to finish. Remember who's big day it is, let them know how you feel about their relationship and let them enjoy the rest of the night.
