Removing your phones contact info from Facebook

In an effort to dominate every mode of communication Facebook has decided to match up phone numbers on both your Facebook Friends List and your mobile Contacts to form one great big contacts list - that only you can see. It is quite a shock to see that Facebook now has the contact information of every friend you have on Facebook.

Facebook has responded to this privacy scare probably driven from a recent HackerNews thread called “Facebook has your complete phonebook”  with both an official post on Facebook’s Wall and a personal message from a Facebook Messenger engineer Ben Gertzfield on HackerNews.

Facebook’s official response to your phones contact info being on Facebook

“Rumors claiming that your phone contacts are visible to everyone on Facebook are false. Our Contacts list, formerly called Phonebook, has existed for a long time. The phone numbers listed there were either added by your friends themselves and made visible to you, or you have previously synced your phone contacts with Facebook. Just like on your phone, only you can see these numbers.”

OK - so why the uproar? To start with it is pretty eye-opening to seenumbers of  friends you didn’t even think you had just by clicking on this link. The scariest part is that Facebook got those numbers with your permission!

As HackerNews user ‘extension’ points out, enabling contact synching on the Facebook mobile apps will result in something similar to the following message:

“Enabling this feature, will periodically send all contact information from your device (name, email address, phone number) to Facebook to be matched up with your Facebook friends and will be subject to Facebook’s Privacy Policy, and your friends’ profile photos and other info from Facebook will be added to your phones address book and you acknolwedge that access to thei data will no longer be subject to you and your friends Privacy Settings"   Woah!!!!.

So by agreeing you
a) basically chose to upload information you’ve inputted into your phone to Facebook and b) people have chosen to give you the numbers.

Just shows sometimes we ought to read the small print!!!

Don't like the idea of your contact info being on Facebook?

You can remove the phone numbers you’ve imported to Facebook Contacts by clicking on this linkontact_importer/remove_uploads.php?r=%2Fphonebook.

or you can go to your Facebook page.....then go to the top right of the screen, click on ACCOUNT, click on EDIT FRIENDS, left side of screen and click CONTACTS. you will see all phone numbers from your phone (FB friends or not) are published that you have stored in your mobile phone.

TO REMOVE, go to RIGHT column, click on "visit this page."
