HOSPITALITY: Avis' New Facility At CT International

Recent Western Cape Business News

Avis has opened its new multi-million rand regional office and turnaround facility at Cape Town International airport. Construction of the new facility, which covers a total area of 50,000m², was necessitated when Airports Company South Africa (ACSA) changed the layout of Cape Town International.

Avis Operations Executive Corne Langenhoven says consolidation of the regional head office, finance, sales and operations under one roof formed part of Avis’ strategy to gear itself for the next 15 years. “Our turnaround facility has been operating from three yards for numerous years. With increased volumes anticipated for 2010 and beyond, the move to one site made logistical and operational sense,” he says.

In addition, the new site will ensure improved work-flow processes for the Cape Town operation, added convenience and enhanced service levels for customers and a better work space for Avis employees.

The turnaround facility includes undercover parking for 200 vehicles, a 16-lane refuelling facility, car wash facility and workshop. “The workshop has 20 work bays with 10 hoists. We also have an on-site fast-lane repair shop for smaller panel beating jobs, which boasts a state-of-the-art air filtration system which exceeds stringent environmental regulations,” says Langenhoven.

In line with Avis’ national green initiatives, a 180 000 litre underground storage tank was installed to capture rainwater runoff from the various Avis buildings. The water will be used to wash cars after each rental. In addition, the newly installed car wash facility can clean three vehicles at a time in about 45 seconds and recycles 75% of the water used in subsequent washes effectively eliminating water wastage and recycling around 35 million litres of water per annum.

Water recycling is complemented with a number of energy saving initiatives including the use of low energy lights and movements sensors in the new buildings.

An additional building was constructed to house Avis Chauffeur Drive, Luxury Cars and Point 2 Point. An office for Zeda Cars – Avis’ trade and retail facility for used cars – has also been catered for on site. Disposing of some 680 vehicles monthly, puts Zeda in a fortunate position of being able to offer a wide range of “newz’d” cars at very competitive prices.  With Avis being an SABS (ISO 9002) listed Car Rental Company; you are guaranteed nearly new cars with full service histories and excellent quality.

Langenhoven says the new development has taken employee well being into consideration with the incorporation of upmarket catering and restroom facilities on-site. “At Avis ‘people are more important than cars’ and the new facility has been designed to ensure maximum comfort and convenience for all our people – from our customers through to our suppliers and employees.”
