DEXION, South Africa’s longest established racking and shelving manufacturer are represented in the Western Cape at the Dexion Storage Centre based in Marconi Beam, Milnerton.
We asked joint managing director, Alan Moule, well known local specialist in the fields of materials handling and storage systems, to what extent they were being adversely affected by the recent and on-going economic down-turn - and were surprised by how positive and optimistic his response was.
“There’s no denying that many local industries are experiencing hardships, and this has inevitably resulted in a slow-down of certain types of purchasing; but many capital projects are long-term plans that need to proceed anyway on the understanding that any so-called recession is bound to be temporary.”
“Success – indeed survival – into the forthcoming economic recovery will in part be influenced by actions today.”
One of the positive side effects of business being slow is that it can sometimes provide breathing space for management to examine their systems, methods, hardware efficiencies and so on. A vital issue all-too-often ignored is potential safety risks in warehouses caused by damage to pallet racking.
A major rack collapse can be disastrous in terms of product loss or damage – and more seriously, injuries or worse to personnel.
Companies are being encouraged to conduct safety audits of their racking – or even better call in professionals such as Dexion to do this for them.
A simple cursory visual check, which is offered free, will usually determine whether there is cause for concern. From there estimates can be prepared for detailed survey and report, including the costs of whatever repairs or replacements are required to make the racking safe.
An entire chapter in Dexion’s Rack Users Manual is devoted to rack damage and safety, detailing causes together with both preventative and remedial actions that should be implemented.
Degree of damage is graded into zones according to potential for disaster and the urgency indicated thereby. The manual is available free from Dexion upon request.
