BUILDING: WSP Involved In Green
Recent Western Cape Business News
WSP Group Africa has been appointed as the technical consultant to the Green Building Council South Africa (GBCSA) for the development of the Green Star SA rating tool for retail and shopping centres.
WSP’s project manager Manfred Braune explains: “The Green Star SA rating tool is an independent rating tool that is a powerful means of transforming the property industry towards more sustainable development – this has been proven in many countries across the world where Green Building Councils have been implementing rating tools.”
Last year, WSP formed part of the technical working group involved with the development of the first Green Star SA rating tool for office buildings and now, as the technical consultant on the Green Star SA Retail Tool Development, is committed to ensuring that the tool is delivered successfully, such that Green Star SA will significantly assist in transforming the retail property development sector in South Africa.
Braune elaborates, “This project involves the development of the GBCSA’s second environmental rating tool to rate the design attributes of buildings. This rating tool will be developed specifically for base building retail centres, and not tenant fitouts. The GBCSA, however, intends developing rating tools for tenant fitouts as well in the future.”
WSP’s role on the project is that of the GBCSA’s technical consultant, managing the technical input and acting as the key technical contributor of the project. This includes the co-ordination of input from various WSP business units in South Africa, including WSP Green by Design, WSP Environment & Energy, WSP Energy Africa, WSP Consulting Engineers, WSP Structures and WSP Civil and Transport.
The scope of work includes managing input from a technical working group, which consists of various market representatives, and includes the chairing of various meetings on a two weekly basis to facilitate the development of the tool.
The project got underway in May 2009 with completion scheduled for approximately February 2010 – the pilot version of the tool is to be released at the GBCSA convention in October 2009.
