Can a printing company win the coveted W Cape “Exporter of the Year” trophy for a record second time?
The Invisible Card Company (Pty) Ltd, which won the trophy in 2006 after only four years of business, is again one of the finalists announced in Cape Town on 29 September in the annual ABSA/ Cape Regional Chamber of Commerce and Industry competition.
The recession has not dented the progress of this privately owned business, which has shown a growth rate of over 40 per cent (compounded annually) since start-up on a shoestring in 2003 with 12 staff in 300 sq m factory space, and antiquated litho printing machinery dating back to the 1980’s.
The company manufactures and exports printed items containing encrypted data, such as prepaid mobile phone recharge cards, lottery tickets and large retail scratch card promotion, and has developed innovative variations of products in its niche market.
Started by entrepreneurs Frank Land and Nico Smuts, who took on established local and international manufacturers and suppliers( including several listed entities) the company is today one of the top manufacturers and exporters of its product range into the difficult African market.
It has acquired the latest flexographic printing presses and personalization equipment for laying down the data, and has expanded to over 150 permanent staff operating out of 3000 sq metres of high-tech factory environment.
Working to exacting, internationally mandated standards for its industry, Invisible Card Co has since start-up annually exported over 95 per cent of its production to exotic locations throughout Africa and is now entering new markets in the Middle East.
Other finalists in the competition, which will be adjudged in mid-October, are :
Cape Reed Products, which exports thatch and thatch products;
EDH, and electronics company which manufactures radar measuring equipment for military purposes and sport;
Mosstrich, a Mossel Bay company which exports ostrich meat and leather products;
Swartland Winery, which exports 85 per cent of its wine production to 40 countries.
