ENGINEERING: Cape Leads In Recycling
Recent Western Cape Business News
PILOT Crushtec has during the past three years experienced a sharp increase in sales of equipment to waste management businesses in the Western Cape.
“The Western Cape is leading the country in terms of recycling waste material. This is due to tight space constraints and very limited access to dumping sites close to Cape Town,” says Ebrahim Astree, a sales manager of the company. It supplies crushing, screening and materials handling equipment to the recycling, quarrying, construction, civil engineering and mining industries.
The most popular crushers are Pilot Crushtec’s RubbleBuster as well as its Pilot Modular TM0605 and BR0605 machines. All three use a horizontal impact crushing unit, but the RubbleBuster is a fully mobile, track-mounted diesel-driven unit, with a built-in discharge conveyor and feed hopper, while the diesel-driven TM0605 and electrically-driven BR0605, require separate conveyors.
“The advantage of horizontal impact crushers for recycling is that they can take a big feed size, and can also act as primary, secondary or tertiary crushers,” says Astree. “They are excellent for crushing construction and demolition waste, including concrete with reinforced steel, as well as asphalt.”
Hentie Kotze, who heads the purchasing of plant and machinery for JLK Projects & Construction, a major construction company in the Western Cape, says the TM0605 crusher bought by the company towards the end of 2008, has proved ideal. “We’re crushing the waste on our sites to create fine sand, since we mainly use it as fill material,” explains Kotze, “though sometimes we produce larger material – a 19 mm stone – for use in non-structural concrete, filling and drainage.”
On the other hand, Adri Vosloo, the general manager of National Scrap Metals in the Cape, has gone for bigger machinery to crush and screen slag material that the company buys in. He recently bought a Pilot Modular MJ1252 granulator jaw crusher that acts as a secondary crusher, and a Terex Finlay 663 double deck mobile screen.
