TRANSPORT:  Vuka Takes Market Lead

Recent Western Cape Business News

Within three years of its introduction to the South African market, the national scooter and motorbike retailer Vuka Scuta has captured the attention of the local commuter market as well as an impressive 20% market share in the motorbike industry.  According to the latest statistics based on new vehicle registrations for 2008, Vuka dominated the market with almost double the sales of their closest competitors.

According to Kevin Ferreira, managing director of Vuka South Africa, these figures validate the company’s entrance into this highly competitive sector of the transport industry.  “When we introduced the Vuka range of scooters and motorbikes to the country, we wanted to offer South Africans an affordable, reliable transport alternative.  We made a concerted effort to introduce bikes that have been designed specifically for South African conditions with the needs of the South African commuter in mind.  The fact that we have become South Africa’s biggest selling bike brand within a three year time frame is irrefutable proof that we satisfied an urgent market demand, we are really proud and know that we are on our way to changing the transport landscape,” mentions Ferreira.

The Vuka range currently consists of six models, which boast with impressive fuel efficiency ranging from 45 – 55km per litre.  With the entry level EL90 model priced at only R5499 and flagship model available from R12 999, the Vuka range offers all commuters a viable solution to suit their budget.  Subsequent to their stock and parts buy-out of Loncin South Africa earlier this month, the Vuka portfolio has been diversified with ten different models of Loncin scooters, street bikes, cruisers and scramblers.

Vuka has a national footprint with 21 corporately owned stores countrywide and an extensive dealer and service network of more than 60 outlets.  In August, Vuka significantly expanded their presence nationally through a deal with the House & Home chain, which will be stocking and selling a variety of Vuka models at their 44 branches countrywide.  Earlier this year, Vuka started its expansion into Africa when the first Vuka store was opened in Maputo, Mozambique.    Negotiations are already well underway in Angola, Kenya and West Africa with enquiries from neighbouring Botswana, Swaziland, Lesotho and Zimbabwe also currently under investigation.
