DEVELOPMENT: Exploit Properties Better
Recent Western Cape Business News
THE Cape Chamber of Commerce has called on the City Council to outline its plans for the development of key areas of the City such as Culembourg, District Six and the old Youngsfield and Wingfield aerodromes.
Jeremy Wiley, President of the Chamber, says that the V & A Waterfront had been a huge success attracting about 20 million visitors a year while Culembourg remained an eyesore.
“Surely it is now time to look more critically at the Culembourg precinct which has the potential to become a much more efficient public transport hub for the CBD, a mixed use development zone and an efficient extension of port activities.
“Business understands that the City and Transnet have been working on the planning around Culembourg and we would like some insight into the planning and development timeframes.”
Wiley said business also wanted to know about planning and time lines for the development of District Six, Wingfield, Youngsfield and many other publically owned and underused areas around the city which were well positioned near public transport routes and industrial areas. He said these areas had the potential to become model “towns” in modern Cape Town.
“The Chamber supports appropriate densification to reduce the distance between the home and the place of work and to reduce urban sprawl and pressure of the urban edge of the City.”
He asked what the City was doing to expedite the processing of land use planning applications and the approval of building plans.
