TOURISM: Strengthening Cape Town/Middle East Connectivity
Recent Western Cape Business News
CAPE TOWN and the Western Cape could hardly have wished for a better Tourism Month gift than Etihad Airways starting its Abu Dhabi-Cape Town service on 30 September this year.
“Not only will this flight increase our access to the Middle East tourism market in general, but it will also improve our Africa/Middle East air connectivity during the 2010 FIFA World Cup™ period,” says Calvyn Gilfellan, CEO of Cape Town Routes Unlimited.
The first Abu Dhabi-Cape Town flight (via Johannesburg) will take off in the United Arab Emirates on 30 September and land in the Mother City on 1 October 2009.
“Cape Town Routes Unlimited are keen to work together with the airline to market Cape Town and the Western Cape’s breathtakingly beautiful, diverse and cosmopolitan tourism offering to this lucrative travel market,” he says.
Cape Town and the Western Cape is home to a vibrant Muslim community and with the Dubai-based investment in the V&A Waterfront, the city and province enjoys strong cultural, culinary and business links with the Middle East. Discerning travellers from the Middle East come to the Western Cape to experience the way in which their history has influenced the region’s traditions, and to enjoy the shopping and infectious rhythm of one of the most sophisticated destinations in Africa.
“It therefore makes perfect sense for air access between the two regions to be strengthened and mutually beneficial marketing opportunities to be explored further.
“We will specifically be looking at collaborating with regards to our 2010 focused tourism marketing campaign, ‘Beyond the 90 Minutes’. Cape Town and the Western Cape’s tourism attractions and activities have been packaged into six fun themed travel itineraries. We want to encourage 2010 visitors to see, hear, feel, smell and taste as much of the destination as possible before, between and after football matches. In other words, we want them to literally go beyond the 90 minutes of the game,” says Gilfellan.
