A Galdabini tensile tester was recently sold to Cape Town Iron & Steel works - the mini mill that melts recycled steel and produces reinforcing bars that are used in the construction industry. The company is part of the Murray & Roberts Group of Companies and is situated in Kuilsrivier, Cape Town. The reinforcing steel bars that are produced at CISCO are manufactured to the highest international specifications and is used in major construction projects across the world. Nationally, through their connection with Murray & Roberts, CISCO has supplied reinforcing bars to all of the major infrastructure projects that are currently in progress and are being planned for the near future.
These projects include the GAUTRAIN, all of the 2010 stadiums, Medupi and Kusile power stations as well as the upgrade of the N4-freeway. In the past CISCO also supplied steel for the construction of Koeberg nuclear power station, Canal Walk shopping centre and the Bergrivier dam; amongst others. Murray & Roberts, through CISCO, is also the licensed user of several quality marks that are recognized internationally, like SABS and the European CARES mark. They are also the supplier of choice, according to the ASTM quality standard, for a multitude of USA companies that are doing construction at several locations around the world for the US government.
The mechanical testing facility at the factory in Kuilsrivier is responsible to ensure that their stringent quality management systems and standards are constantly adhered to. In order to achieve this they are required to have the best equipment available at their disposal. When CISCO felt the need to refurbish the testing facility a thorough investigation was done of all the options available. The main concern was that the new equipment should be beyond reproach; as far as the accuracy of the results was concerned and that the new equipment would be able to repeat this required level of performance continuously, without fail, over a long period of time. In the process several plant visits were made and inputs were received from companies as far away as Germany. In the end it was decided to purchase the Galdabini tensile tester and laser rib measurement system supplied by ECM. This investigation led CISCO to the conclusion that hese two machines will address their requirement completely while it also offered excellent value for money; and the security of the stable and consistent local support.
Wirsam Scientific, a leading supplier of laboratory instrumentation throughout Southern Africa, has had a record few months in their tensile testing division, resulting in sales in the region of R30million and are optimistically looking at a continued growth with the expertise and support from Galdabini.
