CONSTRUCTION: Knysna Project Awarded
Recent Western Cape Business News
THE Knysna Municipality has awarded SSI Engineers & Environmental Consultants (SSI), through Haw & Inglis, a sub-contract for the upgrade of the Knysna - N2 Lagoon Road, which is too narrow to cope with the increasing traffic load passing through Knysna on the way to southern Cape destinations.
The main contract for the upgrade of the Knysna - N2 Lagoon Road is managed by ERO Engineers, with Haw & Inglis appointed as the civil engineering contractor.
There have been a number of motor accidents on the narrow road, with the lagoon on the one side and a steep cliff on the other. The road is also part of the N2 national highway and has experienced increasing traffic jams over Knysna‘s busy tourist season.
SSI’s sub-contract includes design, preparation of tender documentation, construction drawings and supervising the relocation of water and sewerage services some 15 m from the road centre, to a constructed service road adjacent to the new section. All services will also be mapped.
The road will be widened and upgraded to include hard-surface shoulders, turning and passing lanes and a paved sidewalk and will see a 5.5 km strip of land being reclaimed from the Knysna Lagoon and rebuilt above the high tide mark to accommodate the road upgrade. The N2 will remain operational throughout the project.
SSI Project Manager, Paul Lombard, says the project is being implemented in close co-operation with ERO Engineers, Haw & Inglis and Adeco, sub-contracted to design and relocate the electrical services.
During the planning stages of the main contract, an environmental impact assessment was carried out and precautions have been taken to ensure that no building rubble finds its way into the ecologically sensitive Knysna Lagoon.
