FOOD: JBT Strong On Food Processing

Recent Western Cape Business News

JBT has a strong foothold in the food processing and citrus industries in South Africa. The company, through its full maintenance extractor leasing programme, is responsible for around 80% of Southern Africa’s citrus juice extraction activities.

Based in Brackenfell, Cape Town, JBT has regional installed bases as far afield as the Eastern and Western Cape, Northwest, Lowveld, Northern Province, Swaziland and Zimbabwe, where a number of big citrus producers are located. Juice plant installations have also been done further in Africa, such as Nigeria, says Dirk van Wyk, managing director of the company.

South African processors benefit from the worldwide experience FMC Citrus Systems has built up in huge and varied market conditions, in areas such as Brazil, California, Florida, Europe and now also China.

JBT Citrus Systems has always been the leader in extraction technology, and as the company’s development approach is customer requirement driven, new products and process improvements are continuous, van Wyk says.

JBT also plays a major role in food processing - especially canning of fruit, vegetables and fish - with products ranging from processing systems, labellers, and filling and closing systems.

In retort systems JBT has a complete selection of systems including static, rotary and automated waterspray retorts. Filling and closing systems comprise a full range of self lubricating and CIP fillers and seamers, matching today’s needs for higher productivity, reliable performance and flexibility.

JBT is often called upon to customise systems to clients’ specific requirements.

The food division of JBT is a leader in the world on most food related products and is a leader in many fields of products including tomatoes where a full range of equipment is supplied from preparation to very sophisticated evaporation and aseptic equipment. JBT FoodTech is located in most of the dominant food producing countries in the world and is truly a first world player in this sector. The South African market will over the next few years have to take technological leaps in terms of processes, process speeds and efficiency, and JBT is well positioned to fulfill these requirements,” van Wyk says.
