Recent Western Cape Business News

THE CO-OPERATION between the police and the Bellville Community Policing Forum, the 24 Neighbourhood Watches and four City Improvement Districts has reduced crime in the Bellville area.

This was said by Brig Andre van Dyk, the SAPS station commander in Bellville and Mr Hennie Koekemoer chairman of the Community Policing Forum.

In recognition of the achievement and to promote further co-operation, the Police Unit of the Year awards have been revived with the backing of the Tygerberg Chapter of the Cape Chamber of Commerce and Industry. The competition for excellence in policing is designed to support and promote the work of the police in the area.

A new group of winners will be announced every three months and at the end of the year the best of the best will be chosen to receive a floating trophy.

Ms Janine Myburgh, President of the Cape Chamber said the business community would now be working with the police in Bellville to build a stronger and more productive relationship.

The best visible policing member was Warrant Officer Lorette Dippenaar who made the most arrests and the best detective was Sergeant Clinton Lategan who secured the best conviction.

The wining group in the visible policing category was Crime Prevention A-Group consisting of Warrant Officer Riaan Boshoff and constables Conwill Lawrence, Jonathan Booysen, Fabian Fransman, Xolisani Mtwebana, Liesl Simmers, Keanen Joseph and Lee-Lynn Hockey.

The best group of sector commanders (X6) were recognised for strengthening partnerships and liaising with the community. The group consisted of Captain George Havenga, Captain Gerrie de Villiers, Captain Tobias Engelbrecht, Warrant Officer Johannes Smit, Warrant Officer Gabriel Hawkins and Warrant Officer Jacobus van Zyl.

The winners were chosen by the police human resources department and the awards were based on their performance, going beyond the call of duty, attitude and dedication.
