ENGINEERING: GEA's Stronger Cape Foothold

Recent Western Cape Business News

THE food and beverage sector is a key factor in the economy of the Western and Eastern Cape, with major players continuing to upgrade their production facilities to meet growing demand.

With this as backdrop, it is interesting to note that GEA Process Engineering, (previously named GEA Tuchenhagen SA) already a well-known name in the local industry, is strengthening its foothold in the Cape.

The company recently opened a branch office in Cape Town – headed by John O’Rahilly – to even better serve its existing and growing customer base in this region.

Located in Montague Gardens, it shares office and workshop facilities with its sister companies in the GEA group namely GEA Grenco, GEA Grasso and GEA Westfalia Separator. The branch offers sales, servicing and after sales support for GEA equipment in the Western and Eastern Cape.

More specifically, according to O’Rahilly, whose manufacturing background provides a strong customer orientated focus at the new branch, the opening of an office in Cape Town will provide more ready access to its range of services and that its response time will be enhanced.

Staying close to our customers is a critical part of our approach to satisfying both our own and our customers’ expectations.”

We know that the key to our success is to keep talking to our engineering partners and to our customers and to fully understand the needs of each process engineering application”.

In so doing, we strive to offer all our customers processing concepts which are optimised for increasing the productivity, safety, automation and hygiene of the processing operations”, he says.

Whether your project is a new ‘greenfield’ plant or an extension or conversion of an existing process plant, we will be there with excellent back-up service”, O’Rahilly says.

He points out that GEA Process Engineering has its SA head office in Midrand. A 24/7 local service centre at GEA’s Midrand HQ with mechanical and automation technicians are always on hand ,should they be called.

The parent head office is in Germany with nine divisions in more than 250 companies in 50 countries.

The GEA group focuses on the manufacture of special purpose machinery, with particular emphasis on process engineering and equipment.

Process Engineering supplies stand-alone installations and processing lines for customers in the dairy, food, brewing, beverage, juice, wine, pharmaceutical, healthcare, biotechnology, sugar, pulp and paper and chemical industries.

GEA Process Engineering has a wide range of customers including Danone, Nestle, Clover , Dairybelle, Unilever, Woodlands Dairy, Parmalat, Tropica Foods, Cadbury, SABMiller, Diageo, Namibia Breweries, Heineken, National Brands, Tongaat-Hulett, UCL, Coca Cola, SABCO, Amalgamated Beverage Industries and Coca Cola Canners

GEA’s research and development facility in Europe works in close cooperation with our own products management people and our customers to create individual application solutions to meet specific needs.

As a result of this intensive know-how transfer we are able to improve our products continuously and drive innovation. This is part of our strategy – to keep up with the market and to anticipate trends”, O’Rahilly says.

Well, with GEA Process Engineering now truly on the Cape’s doorstep, it seems well positioned to grow into – as O’Rahilly puts it – the brand of choice in process engineering, process equipment and components.
