The Cape Film Commission and the City of Cape Town are to host the inaugural Imbongi Awards to showcase and recognise excellence in Cape Town and Western Cape film industry. The event will be held tomorrow, at the Cape Town International Convention Centre (CTICC).
With six award categories and the Chairman’s Award, the ceremony promises to showcase the very best in local film production talent and facilities and will be held annually from now on.
The Cape Film Commission markets and promotes Cape Town and the Western Cape as a competitive film destination and, through a strategy of growth, integration and transformation, supports the development of the local film industry.
“Over the past eight years Cape Town’s film industry has changed,” says Alderman Ian Neilson, Mayoral Committee Member for Finance, Economic & Social Development and Tourism. “Initially, Cape Town was an exotic location for the well-informed producer looking for the ‘new’, but now it supports a flourishing industry attracting big budget features, commercials and stills production.”
“The City of Cape Town has a strategy to position Cape Town as a globally competitive film destination. It is one of the biggest commercial and stills production destinations in the world and the City is proud to be associated with the Imbongi Awards that recognise excellence in the film industry. Cape Town’s multi-billion rand film industry sustains thousands of jobs in the local economy,” says Mansoor Mohamed, Executive Director: Economic, Social Development and Tourism.
Cape Town’s reputation as a centre for film production excellence will be enhanced by the Imbongi Awards that will recognise and reward individuals and companies for outstanding achievement in the pre-production, production and post production phases of film making.
With a high-profile, independent judging panel and a stringent judging process audited by Galbraith Rushby Accounts, the integrity of the selection process is assured. The seven award categories include Best Contribution to Marketing Cape Town and the Western Cape through film; Cape Town’s Best Line Producer; Cape Town’s Best Locations Professional; Excellence in VFX & Animation; Cape Town’s Best Post Producer; Service Provider of the Year and the Chairman’s Award – a Life Time Achievement Award.
