HOSPITALITY & TRAVEL: Cape Grace Takes Top Honours at the Inter-Hotel Challenge

Cape Grace Chef Candidate, Charmainne Deacon, and Wine Steward, Mpho Masiu, swept the boards at the annual Cape Legends Inter-Hotel Challenge awards dinner held on Friday, 14th August, at the Southern Sun Cape Sun hotel.
The Cape Legends Inter-Hotel Challenge encourages development within the South African hospitality industry and provides a much needed leg-up to young, undiscovered talent. Now in its third year, 25 hotels from the Cape, Port Elizabeth, KwaZulu-Natal and Gauteng took part, however, only Cape Grace and the Elangeni Maharani hotels' Chef and Wine candidates made it through to the finals. A knowledgeable and passionate support team and mentoring by Executive Chef Malika van Reenen and Cape Grace Sommelier Martin Drotsky made this all-girl team a truly formidable one.
In addition to this year's generous food and equipment sponsors, Cape Grace was also paired with award-winning Lomond wines. Charmainne and Mpho, together with the Cape Grace and Lomond teams, worked tirelessly to perfect their final pairing - and it showed in their collective accolades.
Mpho took top honours in the Best Wine Steward category, a well-deserved award for a young, passionate wine master in the making. She received a bursary from the Cape Wine Academy, a Cape Winelands Travel Experience and mentoring under top Tsogo Sun sommelier, Georgio Meletiou, attendance at two prominent wine auctions where she'll be allowed to bid, and two days immersed in the prestigious Platter Wine Guide blind tastings.
Charmainne walked away with three awards: The SAPPO [South African Pork Producers' Organisation] Purple Ribbon Award, the ScanPan Excellent Kitchen Practice Award and the Best Chef Award which will see her jetting off for a three-week working visit at the magnificent Shangri-La hotel in Dubai!
