TRANSPORT: Settlement Of Strike Urgent
Recent Western Cape Business News
THE Cape Town Regional Chamber of Commerce and Industry strongly supports a negotiated settlement to the road transport strike.
“Road transport is an essential service and there could be dire consequences for the country if matters are not resolved soon,” said Mr Jeremy Wiley, President of the Chamber. “We depend on road transport for food and fuel deliveries and if they come to a stop there is no knowing how people will react.”
He said the Chamber had no problems with legal strikes, but the situation was different when essential services were involved and the matter had to be handled with great responsibility. “We urge both sides in the dispute to work towards a settlement so that the matter can be settled before positions harden further.”
Fortunately there had been few reports of intimidation and the Chamber believed that there was a good chance of the strike ending before matters got out of hand or any lasting damage was done to industrial relations in the sector.
