WHEN CSV Construction of Somerset West was considering tendering for projects outside its traditional Western Cape market, one of the priorities was equipment.
Barloworld Equipment, a long term supplier of earthmoving equipment and support to CSV, put its new, used and rental solutions strategy on the table. CSV’s managing director, Alex von Klopmann, says this model worked so well on a bulk earthworks contract near Bloemfontein that several more tenders have been submitted outside the province.
CSV is a construction and civil engineering firm that opened its doors in 1994 and has since also diversified into concrete works and marine construction. Today CSV is among the top five privately owned construction companies in Cape Town. Its earthmoving equipment fleet includes several Cat machines – backhoe loaders, rollers, excavators and graders – all with customer service agreements (CSAs) from Barloworld Equipment for maintenance.
As a conservative company that is committed to safety and quality, CSV did not take the decision to tender on contracts further afield lightly. So when the Bloemfontein based earthworks project came up, the immediate availability of equipment on the ground, with qualified operators, was a major concern.
Barloworld Equipment Bellville sales rep Clinton Carelse, in consultation with rental manager Linda Vincent, tailor-made an equipment solution to suit the contract needs. The Cat package included two 140H graders, two 725 articulated trucks, a D6T dozer and a CP533 roller, sourced from Barloworld Equipment’s rental operations around the country, each machine with its own certified operator. Support was also provided from the Bloemfontein office to keep the machines up and running at all times.
“The buoyancy of the industry last year placed earthmoving machines in high demand and Barloworld Equipment has the extensive footprint and logistic capability to have machines available where and when needed,” says Vincent.
“We can allocate maintenance resources to rental machines anywhere in the field to help keep the fleet productive throughout the contract. Skills development is our major strategic focus and so we have the in-house capability to train and certify operators to suit specific machines and customer requirements.”
CSV’s Alex von Klopmann says flexible, customised equipment solutions assist in accurate tendering, ensure peace of mind for the customer, and allow the contractor to concentrate on the important issues such as safety and quality.
“I would rather pay more for an individually tailored solution, together with an honest and open relationship with my equipment supplier,” says von Klopmann. “Our relationship with Barloworld Equipment helps us to plan ahead.”
