CONFERENCES: Focus On Intellectual Property

Recent Western Cape Business News

An international conference on intellectual property kicks off at the Lord Charles Hotel in Somerset West in Cape Town today. The hosts of this conference, which will be attended by almost thirty countries from around the world, are The Companies and Intellectual Property Registration Office (CIPRO).
“CIPRO is delighted to see so many people in the corporate registry business united under a single roof with the explicit purpose of gathering knowledge on how to better the service provided to economically active citizens throughout the world,” says Mr Keith Sendwe, CEO of CIPRO and outgoing president of the CRF.
The Corporate Registers Forum (CRF) is an international non-profit organisation for administrators of corporate and securities registers. “The theme of the conference which draws to a close on Friday 3 April is ‘Harmony and Synergy in the Administration of Corporate Law’. A number of impressive guest speakers have been invited to educate conference delegates on corporate regulations against the back- drop of the current global financial crisis. Guests include high profile delegates from Bermuda, to China, Wales, Mauritius, New Zealand, Canada, Hong Kong, Malaysia, India, Singapore, and The Netherlands, to name but a few.”
Mr Sendwe continues: “The newest member jurisdiction, The United Arab Emirates, will also be present at the conference. The Department of Planning and Economy of Abu Dhabi joined the CRF in January this year and for the first time in the history of the CRF delegates from Abu Dhabi will be among the guest speakers.”
With a programme filled to the brim with discussion topics, presentations and even sight seeing trips to showcase the beauty of the Cape, this is a unique opportunity for organisations to rub shoulders with each other in an educational setting. “Our guest speakers vary from officials of the World Bank to presentations by the Registrar of Companies of Mauritius and the Chief Executive and Registrar of Companies of England and Wales. We will hear first hand how they dealt with registration difficulties within their own countries, while also sharing their experiences of bringing business advice and support closer to the people of their respective countries,” adds Mr Sendwe.
“CIPRO is passionate about business and we value this opportunity to showcase the business lessons we have learnt while treating our guests to local hospitality, culture, cuisine and wines from our very own South African vineyards.”
Mr Sendwe was elected as CRF president at last year’s CRF conference in Vancouver, Canada. “Last year’s theme was ‘Synergy Between Friends’ and focused on the inter-operability between businesses and jurisdictions. This year we will build on that knowledge and we are proud to do it right here in our very own country.”
The first CRF conference took place in Auckland, New Zealand in 2003 and was mainly a platform for discussions between different countries. “There is so much to be gained from shared experience. We contributed to this sharing of experiences by adding a workshop focused on African Jurisdictions in partnership with the World Bank. This will leave delegates with practical knowledge that can be bent and shaped to better the lives of the people in their countries.”
