EXPO: POWER-GEN Africa 2015: Call for Papers

Recent Western Cape Business News

With Africa’s regulators and utilities facing similar challenges in terms of sustainability and service delivery, POWER-GEN Africa 2015 will increase its focus on sustainability and best practice in African power generation.

Nigel Blackaby, PennWell Events Director, says sustainability has emerged as a critical challenge across the continent in a rapidly-changing sector. “Utilities are facing huge challenges in meeting power demand, therefore our focus in 2015 will be on best sustainable practices, financing, operations and the changing environment across the continent. It is papers on these topics that are of particular interest.”

Blackaby says the event, run concurrently with DistribuTECH Africa in Cape Town, is attracting a steadily-growing pan-African audience. At the 2014 event, over 2,330 power sector stakeholders from 72 countries travelled to Cape Town to participate in event. In 2015, this premier conference is set to bring together up to 3,000 global thought leaders and stakeholders to consider the challenges, trends and relevant technologies around Africa’s power generation, under the theme ‘Emerging opportunities in the world’s fastest growing continent’. The event, to be hosted by PennWell Corporation from 15-17 July 2015 at the Cape Town International Convention Centre, Cape Town, South Africa, will attract a broad range of delegates, including regional electricity distribution companies, municipalities, power producers, utilities, oil and gas companies, mining companies, energy and engineering consultants, government and regulators, environmental agencies, development agencies and investors.

Ahead of POWER-GEN Africa 2015, experts in the field of power generation and related technologies are invited to submit papers for consideration by the Advisory Board, which comprises experts from the broad spectrum of power generation sub-sectors, as well as from a number of African countries. Blackaby notes that the Advisory Board composition ensures that the conference content remains topical and relevant, and meets the needs of stakeholders across the continent.

Blackaby says POWER-GEN Africa has a proud history of outstanding papers being presented at the event, with awards presented for the top three papers. “We have had excellent presentations by a range of speakers – from academics and managing consultants, through to public sector and experts working in the industry. We have also had case studies and insights presented by some of our younger engineers. This illustrates one of the key aims of the event – to facilitate the transfer of knowledge and exposure to best practice across all areas of the industry.”

He adds that papers are not limited to suggested topics. “Prospective speakers can present abstracts with a motivation for any topic. There is ample scope for new thinking, best practice, information sharing and case studies – the audiences are seeking both information on new innovations and practical knowledge.”

Participating in POWER-GEN Africa 2015 enables speakers to be part of the rapid growth in Africa region and add to the debate about key generation challenges for Africa’s electricity sector and long-term sustainable energy supplies, as growth and demand for power intensifies.

Topics to come under discussion include regional market trends and forecasts, strategic planning, optimisation of power production, market structure and regulation, project and financing issues, fossil fired technology, nuclear power, renewables, solar, geothermals, hybrid plants, operations and maintenance, grid integration, and improved forecasting.
