MANAGEMENT: BAT Is Best Employer
Recent Western Cape Business News
For the fifth consecutive year, Stellenbosch-based BAT South Africa has been certified as Best Employer, an accolade awarded to a company that offers its employees outstanding working conditions, investment in development and training while maintaining a culture of excellence and world class performance. What’s more is that the company was named as one of the Top Employers in Africa, one of only seven on the continent to receive this recognition.
Research is conducted by the Corporate Research Foundation (CRF) Institute – a specialist firm that produces the European, Asian and African Top Employer Indices each year - and has just completed this year’s research into the Human Resources policies and practices of a large number of leading South African employers.
In addition to BAT South Africa being certified as a Best Employer and being placed in the Top 10 its affiliate offices in Angola, Mozambique and Zimbabwe were also certified by Top Employers Africa. The achievement underscores the company’s commitment to its people and leadership development. Training and development play a critical role in maintaining the culture of excellence within the company and to this end it invests over 5% of the gross salary bill compared to the corporate average of 3.8%.
BAT South Africa has a robust HR strategy that focuses on attracting, developing and retaining top performers. This includes recruiting 50% of its vacancies with external candidates and having a succession plan. In addition, the company selects up to ten graduates for a two-year management trainee programme annually. Remuneration packages are benchmarked against 22 different blue-chip companies to ensure competitive offerings.
Assessment of the Best Employer was based on the following criteria: primary and secondary benefits and working conditions, training and development, career development and culture management. All results were audited by Grant Thornton and only those that met the stringent research criteria received certification.
BAT South Africa is also one of the few companies with its head office based in the Western Cape – with a long and proud heritage in South Africa spanning 106 years – we hope you can use this story. If you’d like more information or to chat to someone in the HR or Communications department please let me know.
Recently the company opened its Centre of Excellent in Gauteng and over the past 12 months it has embarked on a recruitment drive, creating employment for 390 non-managerial staff (mostly sales representatives) and 48 managers. These employees are all based at respective depots in Roodepoort (the Centre of Excellence), the East Rand and Waltloo in Pretoria. There are an additional number of potential employees, mostly school leavers, that have also been through comprehensive training at the Centre of Excellence. They are now ‘on the bench’ but will be offered job opportunities in the company whenever they arise. By the end of 2012, BAT South Africa will have hired nearly 800 new employees, a significant number given the continued global economic pressure we are experiencing.
