WATER: Watson-Marlow Opens Cape Town Branch

JOHANNESBURG-based peristaltic pump manufacturer Watson-Marlow Bredel SA has opened a branch office in Cape Town.
The company has restructured its sales force and appointed Bernard Rabé as Cape Town area manager to focus on industrial sectors such as food and beverage, pharmaceuticals, cosmetics and environmental.
“In terms of sales we have registered real-term growth of double digit figures over the past 12 months – and our goal is to achieve the same success rate in the Cape,” says Watson-Marlow Bredel SA general manager Nico van Schalkwyk.
He says the company will concentrate on its five core products in the Cape – Watson-Marlow, Bredel, MasoSine, Flexicon and Alitea. “The mining industry is a big part of our business – but it is highly volatile. Our aim is to achieve a 50/50 split between mining and other industrial sectors.”
In explaining the rationale behind the new branch, van Schalkwyk points out: “Our strategy as part of the Spirax Sarco PLC Group is to ‘go-direct’ in all major areas/accounts. We have achieved this goal in recent years with the opening of branch offices in Durban and Rustenburg and they have proved to be highly successful.”
He adds: “With any distributor there will always be a conflict of interest between peristaltic, progressive cavity (mono type) and double diaphragm pumps. To survive in the current economic climate, we need aggressive marketing and a committed sales team to carry us through.”
Rabé has four years of Watson-Marlow and Bredel pump experience in Rustenburg. He comes to Cape Town with proven pedigree in Rustenburg where he established a branch for a well-known pump company that grew in four years from one to five staff members, according to van Schalkwyk.
He comments: “This is an opportunity to call on customers as the OEM – which is what they prefer – and supply them with instant technical back-up.”
