Recent Western Cape Business News

This year, the city of Cape Town will play host to the 14th annual Employee Assistance Professionals Association of South Africa (EAPA-SA) conference to be held from Tuesday 18 to Friday 21 September 2012 at The Lord Charles Hotel in Somerset West.

The theme for this year’s conference is “New Horizons”, with both local and international speakers presenting on topics such as Managing EAP in the Growing Economy and Handling Depression in the Workplace.  This year’s guest speaker is leading international mental health professional Paul Yin, who will be discussing how companies should deal with the impact of economic changes, using China as a case study.

The EAPA-SA is a branch of EAPA International and specialises in the development and networking of practitioners in the Employee Assistance, Health and Wellness fields.

EAPA-SA, provides leadership to employee assistance professionals, in promoting the national and regional growth and development of EAPs in both the public and private sector workplaces in South Africa. EAPA International represents more than 3500 individuals and organisations with an interest in employee assistance across 40 countries.

EAPA-SA’s annual national conference is one of the highlights of the professional calendar and is essential for all in the EAP and wellness industry to attend. Feedback from delegates regarding past conferences has endorsed an enriching and professional experience not only for EAP professionals in direct  EAP and wellness practice, but also for exhibitors and sponsors attending this major event.

Our theme this year explores the landscape of South African EAP’s changing and new developments and partnerships. We will explore the old and the new elements as well as create a space for ideas, interaction and debate so that EAP always remains responsive to the changing workplace,” says Tshifhiwa Mamaila, EAPA-SA President.

This year’s three-day conference expects over 300 Employee Assistance and wellness professionals, service providers and industry experts from all over the country to attend this increasingly growing and relevant event.

International and local speakers will discuss the Role of Hypnotherapy in Employee Wellness; Traditional healers and Wellness; National Health Insurance – The Impact on EAP; E-counselling; Substance abuse- matrix management and drug testing legalities; DPSA – EHW management systems: monitoring and readiness tools; EQ: Emotional Intelligence – “Killer Bosses”; Sport and Recreation as part of Employee wellness; Integration data management system in managing Wellness programmes; Embedded EAP (EAP’s within medical Aid/Concierge/Insurance); and Integrated Health management system in dealing with incapacity.

Renowned US speakers Dee Anna Merz Nagal and Kate Anthony will be hosting a webinar on Online Therapy. This will allow guests at the conference to attend these discussions in the virtual environment by providing a chat room for questions and answers.

"The tools we use that work well should always be reviewed and we should explore new and different ways of serving our clients. We can either keep up or fall behind,” comments Mamaila.

The EAPA-SA president believes that it is this attitude that keeps the local organisation on the cutting edge of its fields; and that this conference; set in the picturesque  NH The Lord Charles Hotel in the Western Cape; gives EAP’s an opportunity to tap into their creativity, test their vision and push boundaries in a relaxed and tranquil environment
