VENTURES: CTICC's Ice Skating Arena For Disney

Recent Western Cape Business News

Over 8000 square metres of exhibition space is in the process of being transformed into an international ice skating arena, in preparation for Disney On Ice presents Worlds of Fantasy. This event, which will be held at the Cape Town International Convention Centre (CTICC) from the 6 – 10 July 2012, is expected to attract a 6000 strong audience.

According to CTICC, General Manager for Commercial and Business Development, Megan Arendse, this is the first time in the centre’s nine year history, that an ice rink has been constructed in the CTICC’s exhibition halls. In order to achieve this feat and create the large scale indoor ice rink, it will take 425 man hours to install, maintain and breakdown the ice floor, for a 5 day engagement. The entire process from start to finish is expected to take between 24 and 48 hours.

In addition, two 64-ton refrigeration units, water hose, pumps and aluminium panels had to be specially brought in. “The ice rink construction process requires a stringent set of conditions to be met, which the CTICC was readily able to accommodate. The air-conditioning in the exhibitions halls will be switched off for the duration of this event, in order to ensure that the ice does not melt” says Arendse. Ice Engineers will also be on standby to ensure that the surface temperature is constantly monitored throughout the day and night.

During the construction phase 48 000 litres of water will be utilised. In addition aluminium panels will be installed on the exhibition floor. Light sprays of water will then be applied and the water will then be allowed to freeze in order to seal the surface.  Once the surface is sealed, heavier coats of water will be added until the desired thickness of 1.5 to 2 inches is achieved. The entire ice floor including the panels weighs approximately 140,000 lbs.

Show Producer, Nicole Feld says that the event is set to whisk the audiences to four magical locations, including the auto-racing terrain of Cars, a visit to Andy’s bedroom for some fun with the stars of Toy Story 3, a journey under the sea to Ariel’s world from The Little Mermaid, and then into the mystical land of Pixie Hollow for a presentation of Tinker Bell.  “To be the first to introduce the Tinker Bell story live on ice and to be entrusted with the beloved Toy Story characters is incredible, and we are thrilled to bring these heartwarming tales to families across South Africa for the very first time," she adds.

The show will also utilise an advanced lighting system, with over ninety moving lights and two or three thousand control channels that enable the lighting to tilt, change, and create infinite colors. The programming of these lights is a lot more intensive than conventional lighting and as a result, we average about an hour to an hour and a half of programming per minute of music” says Emmy Award winning Lighting Designer, Peter Morse.

Over the past two years, we have seen a significant increase in the demand for special events, like Disney On Ice” says Arendse. CTICC has played host to the Deadmau5 concert, Ministry of Sound New Year’s Eve Party, the Cape Town International Jazz Festival and the 33rd Loeries Awards to name a few.

In addition to raising the global competitiveness of Cape Town as a leading meetings and events destination, hosting an event of this nature is further testament to the centre’s world class versatility and flexible infrastructure” concluded Arendse.
