VULCAN STEEL was founded in 1994 and moved to larger new premises when ownership changed in 1998. Subsequently the premises were expanded twice as the company grew with the addition of new equipment particularly in the laser cutting and bending arena. The company is a specialist sheet and plate stockist and processor. Its main speciality is profile cutting.
Vulcan Steel based in Montague Gardens, has a 2 800 sq m warehouse workshop with two ten ton cranes.
“Cape Town is in general a jobbing market and we have very diversified customers. Some of the main sectors we supply are marine, structural, mining and quarries, earth moving and general engineering,” says managing director Robin Dennison.
“We carry different grades of steel including structural, marine, very high strength and very hard wearing qualities. We also represent a Swedish steel company SSAB in the Western Cape and carry and process most of their grades of steel including Domex, Hardox and Weldox, he says.
“Our main processing equipment include our 6.2m x 2.1m 4Kw and two @ 4m x 2m 5 Kw lasers. This gives us the largest laser cutting capacity in the Western Cape. We can laser cut steel up to 25mm thick, depending on the type and quality of the material to be cut. We also cut large quantities of stainless steel, aluminium and sometimes more exotic metals such as brass.”
“To complement our accurate lasers we have a Trumpf press brake with an effective bedding length of 4 250mm and a 230 ton bending force with a 5 axis bending back-stop making it a highly sophisticated press brake. It is one of best in South Africa,” according to Dennison.
“Besides flame and laser cutting and bending we drill, counter-sink, chamfer and weld-prep. The latter process is carried out by mechanical and flame cutting means. If required we will assist clients in finding unusual metals and processes which we do not usually offer,” he says.
