HYDRAULIC & Automation Warehouse (HAW) Cape Town, part of the Hytec Group, recently supplied hose, fittings and accumulators, as well as additional product requirements for a ground-breaking, customised maize planter, built by Rovic & Leers, an original equipment manufacturer (OEM) of premium quality farming machinery.
“A farmer visited the Rovic & Leers exhibition at the Nampo Agricultural Show in Bothaville last year. He enquired about a 21-metre wide, 24-row planter that could also incorporate a fertilizer system capable of carrying 18 tons of fertilizer,” says Raymond Forlee, technical sales representative, HAW Cape Town.
At that point, the biggest ‘Voor’ planter Rovic & Leers had in its range was 12-metres wide, with a carrying capacity of eight tons. Realising that farming equipment are getting more powerful, and that bigger implements can assist farmers in reducing their input costs, the pioneering Rovic & Leers engineering team took up the challenge and completed a provisional design and quote for the customer.
Once the farmer accepted the quote, Rovic & Leers built and assembled the implement. HAW was contracted to measure, assemble and supply the hose assemblies to complete the connection of the system.
“To absorb the shocks from the tines that hit rocks in the planting process, we used two of our 20-litre accumulators. As the pressure was within the 200 bar range, we selected hose to SAE100R2AT specification to perform the various functions required of the planter, including the frame lift, wingfold, wing lock, parkjack and for driving the fan motor,” says Forlee.
The unit was tested and delivered on time. The implement has since generated sufficient interest to lead to a number of enquiries, with the potential for orders to follow.
Headquartered in the Mother City, Rovic & Leers has been a long-standing customer of HAW Cape Town, who ensures that the OEM is supplied with standard, off-the-shelf items on time and that the customised solutions it offers are cost-effective.
