TRANSPORT: City Appoints Dial-A-Ride As Provider
Recent Western Cape Business News
The City of Cape Town has appointed a new service provider, Fox Transport CC, to operate its Dial-a-Ride service. Fox Transport will render this service from 1 July 2012 to 30 June 2014. This appointment seeks to further enable the City to provide a universally accessible public transport system.
At present Dial-a-Ride has over 6 000 registered users. The current service is only able to provide for just over a thousand of these users.
The City has pledged to do everything possible to ensure a smooth transition in operations, so that there is minimal impact on passengers.
In order to facilitate these improvements and keep up with the cost of providing the service, and due to the fact that fares have not been increased in four years, a general fare increase of 10% will be effected from 1 September 2012.
This new appointment forms part of the City’s broader vision of providing universally accessible public transport across the peninsula. Developments in this regard have already been seen in the MyCiTi buses, where the stations offer level boarding for all passengers, as well as tactile flooring for the blind to guide them to the buses, and audio loops for the hard of hearing.
