INVESTMENT: PSG Now Leans Toward Technology
Recent Western Cape Business News
STELLENBOSCH-based investment group PSG has of late showed an un-characteristic leaning towards the technology sector.
Last year PSG surprised the investment community by buying a fairly large stake in Asher Bobot’s technology conglomerate EOH Holdings (although the stake was reduced from 10.4% to 7.6% in April).
Technology has never loomed large (in any form) in PSG’s sprawling portfolios, unlike the other great Stellenbosch-based investment group Remgro (which consolidated a sizeable technology portfolio under Venfin).
But the EOH transaction seems to point to a willingness by PSG to look at selective technology applications, and recently PSG has made two ‘early stage’ technology investments in the form of Energy Partners and Stellenbosch Nanofibre Company.
Both ventures look opportunistically pitched in niches where local demand from industry and ordinary citizens – due to government inefficiencies and oversights – could be really strong in future.
Energy Partners designs energy effective solutions to the corporate market, a captive market in light of the dramatic developments in electricity pricing in the last two years.
Unfortunately, it is not possible to gauge how Energy Partners are performing as PSG indicates no results have been reported since the company is newly formed.
But PSG has indicated that with energy costs set to continue to rise in South Africa, Energy Partners “is ideally positioned to secure a large portion of the attractive energy savings industry”.
PSG was less forthcoming about Stellenbosch Nanotech in its recent results, but from what CBN can construe the company uses nanofibre ‘teabags’ to filter water. Essentially this involves reducing water permeability and maximising protection against the transmission of infection – which, judging by a recent report on water quality by government, again sounds like PSG is pitching into the arena of essential services.
