WINE: Du Toitskloof Gets Competitive Edge
Recent Western Cape Business News
WHEN prominent South African wine producer, Du Toitskloof, considered purchasing a new separator, GEA Westfalia Separator South Africa was the choice. This separator will be the first integrated directdrive machine to be installed in South Africa. “Its technology is so exclusive that none of our competitors can offer the same benefits to their clients,” says Annarie Bruwer, sales engineer, GEA Westfalia Separator, South Africa.
With an innovative, unique no-gear, no-belt and no-substructure drive concept, the GSC 200i Separator is specifically designed to simplify the technical workings of the machine. “By connecting the drive rotor directly to the spindle of the separator, and by fixing the motor to the separator frame, the GSC 200i Separator saves up to 35% more space,” explains Bruwer.
Since the energy is transmitted with a direct connection from the motor to the spindle and the bowl, the energy losses are lower than with flat belt machines. The newly developed centripetal pump also uses this low-energy mode, which reduces friction losses through direct power transmission, leading to energy savings up to 20%.This reduction in parts and maintenance also leads to less down-time and a more reliable production process.
Du Toitskloof will mainly be using the GSC 200i separator to clean wines from its bentonite fining, taking pressure off its Bucher crossflow filter and increasing the lifespan of the crossflow membranes. Using centrifugal force, the separator separates solids from liquids and recovers on average between 40% and 60% wine from lees. This allows the winery to handle some thicker material, leading to less waste.
While the GSC 200i will only be installed during harvest in 2012, Du Toitskloof has high expectations of its new separator. “We expect it will improve productivity and efficiency tremendously, cutting lead-times so that we can deliver wine to our clients faster,” says Shawn Thomson, production manager at Du Toitskloof.
