INFOTECH: Digital Depot Opens In Cape Town

Recent Western Cape Business News

Digital Depot, believed to be the first online electronics store catering to the film and media industry, has opened its first retail outlet in Cape Town – at the Northgate Estate business park near Paarden Island.

This was confirmed by Digital Depot’s sales and marketing manager, Ashleigh Martyn, who said the physical store allows clients to ‘’touch and feel the products” - and to participate in in-store demonstrations.

We will naturally maintain Digital Depot’s online presence. The retail shop is an extension of what we offer the marketplace, allowing customers to select products in a brick-and-mortar environment, as well as allowing us to extend our customer service capabilities – including the better provisioning of product warranties.”

Martyn said the company is continually looking at ways to deliver leading edge products to its client Base. “We put a lot of focus on understanding our market’s needs and tailoring ideal solutions for them.”’

We are also looking at ways to cut down on capital costs for our clients. Investment in technology, especially in the film and media industry, can be quite onerous. We recently decided to offer products on a rental basis to our clients – as a way of cutting out capital costs. Colour grading systems, for example, can be extremely expensive and we are committed to giving the local market access to these products so that they can compete on a global level.”

Martyn said the solutions incorporate the products and applications of various technology suppliers, including G-Tech, Apple, Sonnet, Black Magic Design, Netstor and ATTO. By using the right products tailored to match a client’s needs – but by using a rental option, it can cut design and installation costs by as much as 90% on a monthly basis, and is already in use by a number of local  companies. Exciting developments to look out for in Digital Depot’s near future , said Martyn, include the usage of the retail premises to provide offsite storage and backup of footage and data, and archives for clients.

She said Digital Depot is particularly focused on professionals needing top end solutions, adding that the outlet in Cape Town is expected to be the “first of several similar stores”.
