Recent Western Cape Business News
SINCE the inception of Cape Town-based TESA in 2000, little could the founders have foreseen the trajectory of growth the effort would show.
Driven by managing director and majority shareholder Anni Bodington, people employed at inception grew from four to a permanent staff component of 75 currently. The factory at start was only 300 sq m. Today the Montague Gardens, Cape Town based facility is a beehive of activity, covering 4 500 sq m.
This implies very healthy growth. And so it has been. From the financial year ending 2003 to the year 2009, TESA has shown an average revenue growth rate of around 30% annually. For the 2010 financial year, growth in turnover exceeded 120%.
For this achievement TESA was last year honoured by the Exporter Award 2011 for Excellence in Engineering and Manufacturing in the Absa/Cape Chamber of Commerce’s competition.
“It is our vision to be the leading supplier and manufacturer of high volume fencing products and infrastructure solution providers in our industry on the African continent while maintaining international standards”.
“The TESA mission is to persist in the journey to success for favourable market recognition of the TESA brand with integrity and courage whilst aiming for extra-ordinary contribution to excellence remains steadfast. Our values lie in exceptional service and ethical behaviour in practice, teamwork, passion and delivery in expertise of staff. We strive for innovation, creativity and constant improvement of the company as a whole while maintaining an environment of respect, leadership, integrity and growth for all stakeholders”, Bodington says.
The success story began in 2000 when a sister company, a specialist machining and machine building company, used an opportunity to build a fully automated roll former to manufacture fencing pales. The unique pale shape was patented and 18 months later, TESA was registered as a company to provide diversification from engineering to a product based business.
Through ongoing adversity and tenacity displayed by the entire TESA team, the company has evolved and diversified from the domestic market and construction industry. In 2008 it entered the telecommunications sector.
The products have evolved over the years and the range expanded to include mesh products.
In its ongoing pursuit of excellence, TESA has received ISO listing had has trademarked the unique fencing pale, synonymous to the company.
“The client base in the telecoms sector has increased and from the inception of the company, where the first gate was made the wrong way around, progress has been significant growing to a multi million Rand, award winning entity of which we are very proud”, Bodington enthuses.
TESA’s reputation for being adaptable to the ever changing specifications in the market it operates in and as a well-known provider of quality products and exceptional service offerings are as a result of a never-give-in attitude. It continues to focus on a customer driven initiative while research is in progress to expand product offerings.
“TESA’s commitment towards affecting positive change through social responsibility and community involvement, remains active in environmental conscious practice, and is evident in the many community and enterprise development projects we partner with”.
“To date, TESA has supplied more than 3 500 fences for cellular network Base Transmission Stations (BTS sites) in Africa, is specified as preferred supplier for many African networks in 16 countries and continue to grow from strength to strength”, Bodington says.
Based on the excellent export achievements and also growing additional local demand in the northern provinces, TESA now has long term plans to open a manufacturing facility on the Reef as well, according to Bodington.
