MATERIALS HANDLING: Swissport Turns To Toyota Forklift

Recent Western Cape Business News

AS everyone knows, everything goes at great speed and precision at an airport. If a system falters, the knock-on effects can be very unpleasant. This is especially so at Swissport Cargo Services, based close to the Cape Town International Airport.

As a subsidiary of internationally known PAI Partners, Swissport has over the past 13 years built a commanding position as ground handling cargo agent at the airport, says Songezo Vananda, manager cargo services.

We are the leading cargo handler in the Cape, with about 55% of the air cargo market. One of the reasons for our success is the speed, safety and consistency with which we handle import and export goods”, Vananda says.

So when Swissport recently had to replace its forklift equipment, it turned to Toyota Forklift. “Reliable handling equipment is crucial to our operation and we simply can’t afford breakdowns. Should that however happen we require quick repair response times”, Vananda adds.

Leric Smith, Toyota Forklift’s area sales executives in the Western Cape, says his company provided Swissport with ten forklifts on a 60 month rental maintenance deal. “We won the deal in stiff competition with other suppliers”, he says.

The new fleet comprises eight electrical powered units, six with a capacity of 1.8 tons and two with a capacity of 2.5 tons. Two diesel powered units were also provided, one with a handling capacity of 7 tons, and the other a three tonner.

We are continually growing our market share because customers know that they can rely on us, not only with quality brands, but the value added services we offer”, says Smith.

The company offers a wide range of value-added services such as rental and used equipment options, both long and short term rental contracts, driver training and various other services.

Toyota Forklift is the sole distributor of Toyota Forklifts, BT Equipment, Raymond Equipment and Flexi in South Africa.

Being part of the listed Eqstra Industrial Equipment fold, we have become the partner of choice in distribution, rental and value-added services in the industrial, materials handling and agricultural market”. Smith says.
