CONSTRUCTION: Hospital Bend Bridges Win Fulton Award
Recent Western Cape Business News
The winners of this year’s Fulton Awards, presented by the Concrete Society of Southern Africa (CSSA) are the new overpass bridges in the Hospital Bend Preselection Scheme in Cape Town. They won in the Construction Techniques category. The project was submitted by consultants BKS Engineering and Management, who designed the bridges.
Councillor Brett Herron, Mayoral Committee Member for Transport, Roads and Stormwater, said: “Cape Town's role as a world leader, particularly in the fields of design and infrastructure, is evidenced by the City being shortlisted for the World Design Capital award 2014, and also by winning awards such as the Fulton Award.”
The judges were impressed with the innovative design, use of the latest design software (which had to be upgraded due to the unique design) suspended formwork system used – by means of purpose-made, structural steel lattice overhead girders with steel support structures. This design required careful integration of the various construction elements. Conventional support work was not possible since traffic and safety considerations dictated innovative engineering.
The citation notes that the Anzio Road overpass was particularly challenging as it had to accommodate vertical as well as horizontal transition curves, and varying cross-fall. Another element that impressed the judges was the attention given to the building materials that have improved resistance in coastal conditions, but also, in effect, reduce carbon emissions.
