VENTURES: Forktech Shows Healthy Growth

Recent Western Cape Business News

FORKTECH, which was established in Cape Town in 1997, has steadily built itself into one of the Cape’s leading forklift rental operations. The latest feather in its cap is the extension of a major contract, for six years, to service the forklift requirements of Fresh Produce Terminals, a division of Capespan, at Cape Town Port’s multipurpose terminal.

Johann van Tonder, the founder of the company, says Forktech has been supplying Fresh Produce Terminals for the past 15 years, making available up to 80 forklift truck units as required.

Forktech specialises in Nissan forklifts – either diesel, LPG or electric driven – with capacities ranging from 1.5 tons up to 7 tons.

Although Forktech has a very large client base, too long to list here, Forktech is a major supplier to a number of the big fruit cold stores in all of the fruit geographical areas, most of the fresh produce market agents at Epping Market and is making continuous inroads into the industrial areas.

Van Tonder says there is a lively demand for forklift rentals, mainly from clients who want to concentrate on their core business and then outsource their materials handling requirements.

Forktech currently has a fleet of no less than 340 Nissan forklift units and, says van Tonder, the company’s business has grown to such an extent that these units are deployed not only in the Western Cape, but as far afield as Upington and along the coast to Durban and Komatipoort.

Our aim is to supply forklift trucks to the industry on the basis of usage determined by the activities in the industry.

The need for such a service has proved to be widespread. We strive to provide a service directed to the need of our customers and to keep in line with the customers requirements, making a forklift truck not an expense item but rather a tool to reduce company cost. We work closely with our clients to give them the power of choice regarding the usage of the equipment”, he says.

The only time we can really prove to our customers the support behind our success is the day the client needs to put us to test. We call it ‘The Moment of Truth’. This is the time when things go wrong and most people do not want that experience.

We believe in an ‘on time supply’ in order to give our customers the benefit of using the equipment only for the time required. Forktech is fully equipped to deliver on time any place in the country for the specific period the equipment is required.

Large numbers of forklifts can be road transported and delivered to the client’s doorstep within 24 hours, anywhere in the RSA, reducing the unnecessary cost of taking the equipment before the required period”.

Forktech operates a fully equipped workshop facility to maintain its fleet and for the rebuilding of forklifts.

Fully qualified technicians are available 24 hours a day to carry out any repair work where ever required.

Regular servicing on the client’s site ensures that rental equipment remains in top condition for the duration of the rental period.

Forktech offers an immediate replacement if for whatever reason the unit is not up to the client’s standard or if repairs cannot be carried out immediately.

Forktech has recently also extended its service, through its agency relationship with Merlo, to service the construction and farming sectors.
