INTERNATIONAL TRADE: Mastering Complexity Of Global Trade
Recent Western Cape Business News
In May 2000, the German based international freight forwarder Röhlig & Co merged with South African based logistics management group Grindrod, and a powerful new entity – Röhlig-Grindrod – was formed which has come to play a compelling role in the local logistics segment.
The German company, formed in 1852, is an international forwarding group with more than 1 850 qualified employees with over 70 different nationalities in 29 countries, whilst Grindrod, established in 1910, is a holding company invested in subsidiaries and associates operating freight, financial and shipping services, both locally and abroad.
This joint venture offers services in conventional or containerised sea freight, vessel charters, airfreight, overland cargo and customs clearance. It can also offer prime warehousing and distribution facilities, domestic transfers, strategic planning, auditing services and marine insurance.
Advice on stock control, bond-store management, international regulations, overseas payments, customs tariff consulting and logistical support on all freight requirements are also provided.
The company believes that it has an important edge. Candice du Randt, sales manager for the company’s Cape Town branch says: “When it comes to moving freight for our customers, we believe the solid relationships that we have built help us to understand the varying needs of our individual clients. By investing in staff and empowering them with knowledge, one retains both colleagues and customers”.
The company recently hosted a freight training workshop for its customers covering all aspects of international trade. “We had such an overwhelming response for people wishing to attend that we had to add more workshop days”, she says. This is honest marketing at work.
“Our greatest strength is our capability and willingness to customise our systems to our clients’ specific requirements. While we offer all the characteristics of a family run company within a friendly environment, we still maintain the negotiating power of a multi-national organisation”.
The company has offices across Southern Africa. It’s Cape Town branch will be moving to its custom designed and built, eco-friendly office and warehouse complex in August at Airport City.
