“This is only the second time that this prestigious event will be hosted on African soil. Pretoria hosted the congress in 1929 – more than eighty years ago. It is truly our privilege to welcome these delegates from across the world and allow them to experience the hospitality South Africa is renowned for,” states Calvyn Gilfellan, CEO of Cape Town Routes Unlimited.
“It was time that this conference came to Africa again and what better place than South Africa – widely considered the gateway to Africa. The continent is crammed with geological superlatives with many must-see sites for geologists. Cape Town was the first choice because it’s a premier, value for money destination,” added Dr. Craig Smith from the Geological Society of South Africa.
“It is events like these that underscore the importance of the envisaged convention precinct and justify the R4.5 billion investment in infrastructure development needed to realise the vision of establishing Cape Town as one of the top long-haul convention destinations by 2020,” comments Rashid Toefy, CEO of the CTICC.
