BUILDING: Builder Keeps It Green
Recent Western Cape Business News
AS a member of the Green Building Council of South Africa (GBCSA), Aveng Grinaker-LTA is committed to making environmental considerations a priority on all of its contracts. On a number of high profile projects in Cape Town, the contractor is working close to ecologically sensitive areas, and environmental management is at the top of its agenda.
Aveng Grinaker-LTA’s Mark Belman elaborates: “Our contracts to build a new hospital in Mitchell’s Plain, a new Makro store in Montague Park and a new high-tech forensic science facility for the SA Police Service in Plattekloof, as well our refurbishment project at the Blue Route Mall in Tokai, all have one thing in common. They feature stringent environmental management plans, to conserve vulnerable plants and animals and minimise the projects’ impact on the environment.”
The presence of an environmentally sensitive wetland adjacent to the Blue Route Mall means that Aveng Grinaker-LTA is taking all precautions to ensure that there is no contamination of the storm water system with any construction materials. “In terms of the Green Building requirements, we are limiting any environmental impact as far as possible - by recycling waste, reducing our carbon footprint by limiting the transport of materials and plant, and using recycled materials wherever possible,” Belman explains.
