PETROCHEMICALS: Engen Invests R100m In WCape

Recent Western Cape Business News

FOR many years Engen’s well-being in the Western Cape relied heavily on the delivery capabilities and storage facilities of competitors in the province. This is now something of the past. Since 2005, Engen has added a total of 34 000 cubic metres of storage capacity to it’s fuel depot in Montague Gardens. This is expected to cater for its business needs until approximately 2020.

According to Engen national operations manager, Jeeva Chetty the company now has a storage capacity of 60 000 cubic metres at the depot located on the western perimeter of the Cape Town city centre; an investment that has cost Engen approximately R100 million.

Having stopped our dependency on the storage facilities at nearby Chevron and BP, we can now aggressively grow our retail and commercial market share in the Western Cape, boosting our level of customer service to even greater heights, and delivering on our brand promise ‘With us you are Number One’,” Chetty tells CBN.

From February Engen launched a very visible advertising campaign in local Western Cape newspapers, asking for interested franchisees to develop new Engen service stations in the region.

Chetty stresses that it is Engen’s aim to be the “undisputed champion of the local petroleum industry, which will be achieved by maintaining our market leader status in the South African fuel industry.”

Engen in the Western Cape continues to be supplied both by its own refinery in Durban, as well as from the Chevron refinery in Milnerton and BP’s depot in Montague Gardens. Product is also brought in overland via road and rail transport. And while supply routes won’t change, Engen’s new control over its own volumes is set to make a big difference, Chetty says.

In addition, the company has also installed modern inventory management systems, meaning it is always sure of the amount of stock it is carrying, resulting in better stock replenishment and slicker logistics. All of this has greatly improved Engen’s customer service and competitive standing, Chetty says.
