With all tickets sold, this year’s Design Indaba is set to enhance Cape Town’s position as a global design capital and will provide a major boost to the local economy.
The Design Indaba conference and expo is a key calendar event for the City of Cape Town and is being held at the Cape Town International Convention Centre (CTICC) between 23 and 27 February 2011.
The Design Indaba is a multi-sectoral event that features advertising, architecture, craft, décor, film, graphic design, interior design, jewellery, new media, publishing, product design and visual media. It is the brainchild of Interactive Africa, led by Ravi Naidoo.
“By attracting the world’s best design talent, Design Indaba has become a respected institution in the world’s creative landscape. Cities across the world that are positioning themselves as creative hubs have recognised the continual growth and success of Design Indaba,” said Naidoo.
Design Indaba showcases the best of design and products that are not only produced locally, but also help to encourage exhibitors to trade directly to both the South African public and local and international buyers.
The Design Indaba has over the years strengthened Cape Town’s reputation as a global events and innovation hub. According to the UCT Graduate School of Business Report, the event contributed R232 million to the national Gross Domestic Product in 2010 and helped to create over 900 jobs. The event is expected to attract 40 000 visitors, 170 international buyers and over 300 exhibitors in 2011.
The City’s support as a development partner to Design Indaba provides a much needed platform for Small, Medium and Micro enterprises (SMMEs) from across Cape Town to showcase their products.
