TRANSPORT: Serco Upbeat About Business In 2011

Recent Western Cape Business News

2010 has been a positive year for truck and trailer body builders Serco, with orders up significantly on 2009 and projections for further increases in business over the next year based on strong confirmed orders for the first quarter of this year.

Most transporters had cut back substantially on new vehicles during 2008/9, but there are positive indications that they now are committing to replacement programmes for their fleets which will continue, benefiting vehicle body manufacturers.

This is according to managing director Clinton Holcroft who has led a concerted drive to make Serco greener with a resolve to continue the environment friendly drive into 2011 and beyond.

Holcroft is determined to reduce Serco’s carbon foot print and improve sustainability, not only at the company’s headquarters in Durban but also at its branches in Johannesburg and Cape Town. This year saw the introduction of various projects to reduce the amount of electricity consumed as well as a project to harvest rain water for vehicle wash bays.

We will work in close co-operation with clients to produce greener vehicles.”

Customers are finding there are significant benefits when replacing older vehicles, as design innovations and new materials have resulted in significant vehicle body weight savings. These result in lower fuel consumption, improved payload and reduced CO2 emissions”.

Holcroft says Serco is continuously trying to improve efficiency and product flow to increase productivity and reduce costs.

In reality, the pressure is on us because although environment friendly vehicles are nice to have, high quality and competitive prices are still paramount in the buying decisions of customers.”

Holcroft says customers want to deal with professionals who build high quality products and provide an efficient back up service.

This benefits Serco who have an established reputation and are leaders in the truck and trailer body building sector.

The World Cup gave us an unexpected boost last year providing a healthy increase in business and we need to follow through strongly on that. I am confident about the year ahead, our inquiries and orders are up and we are geared to handle whatever comes our way,” Holcroft says.
