VENTURES: .NH3 Is The Keen Competition

Recent Western Cape Business News

NH3 Refrigeration, established by Hamish Horrell, Marthinus Vernis and Michael Brown in 2005 and which is based in Maitland, Cape Town, has developed into a keen competitor in the industrial and commercial refrigeration segment of the market.

Importantly, it has established for itself a wide footprint in the marketplace, serving such segments as the marine industry, wineries, the meat industry, poultry, the fruit industry and general food processing amongst many others.

Horrell says key to the company’s success is that it makes its technical expertise available 24 hours a day, seven days a week. This is important, as clients rarely have the luxury to see their refrigeration systems out of action for a while.

“Maintenance is a necessity for most of our clients. Our contracts can be tailor made to our customers specific requirements, whether it is a basic inspection along with a written report on the work to be done, or a fully inclusive contract, including parts and labour”, he says.
NH3’s capabilities include design, manufacture, installation, technical service and replacement parts. “No matter what type of industrial refrigeration requirement you may have, we can provide the specialist treatment that will ensure that complete requirements are met,” Horrell claims.

Sales and marketing manager Chantal Kisten points out that services include the installation and commissioning of cold/freezer rooms, CA rooms, compressors, condensers and evaporating coils. Over and above servicing compressors and condensers, the company is also often tasked with the servicing of valve stations, pumps, chillers and so on.

She says the equipment NH3 uses during installations and maintenance is of high quality. The company develops and maintains systems that use either (mostly) ammonia or freon.
The company stocks a large range of refrigeration spares such as Hasegawa, Witt, Mycom, Grasso, Sabroe, Hansen, RS, Henry, Sullair, Robinet and Danfoss to ensure efficient delivery with quick turn-round times. Important to note is that NH3 Refrigeration is the sole agent for the popular Hasegawa range in South Africa. A large quantity of Hasegawa stock is kept at all times.

NH3 Refrigeration has also been selected as the sole agents for Snowkey Ice Systems Southern Africa, which is one of the largest ice systems manufacturers in China.
Snowkey manufactures many types of sizes of ice making machines and systems. Eight percent of the components used in their ice systemsare imported such as Danfoss, Bitzer, Siemens, Telemacanique and so on.

A number of key projects have been completed by the company in recent years. These include a fruit processing plant in PE, where a complete freezer plant was installed, the supply and installation of two chilling plants for a chemicals and adhesive company in Cape Town and the supply and installation of new valve station, coils as well as the upgrade of all cold rooms for a cold storage facility in Cape Town.

These are mentioned to indicate the versatility of the company in the industrial refrigeration field. It has undertaken many smaller projects throughout the Western Cape that include the supply and installation of condensers, vessels, valve stations and compressors.
