TOURISM: W Cape Second Most Visited Province

Recent Western Cape Business News

The Western Cape was the second most visited South African province during the 2010 World Cup, welcoming 108 384 foreign tourists to its shores. This is according to figures released by South African Tourism earlier this week.

Gauteng was the most visited province, receiving 223 039 foreign tourists for the World Cup, while KwaZulu-Natal followed the Western Cape with 83 819 tourists. It was also these three provinces’ fan parks that received the most visitors, with Cape Town and Durban drawing the majority of soccer fans.

Given the fact that Cape Town and the Western Cape did not host the opening or the final World Cup matches and only had a small number of base camps, but still managed to attract the second largest number of World Cup tourists in the country, is without a doubt a feather in the hat of the Western Cape tourism industry. It is also further testimony that Cape Town Routes Unlimited’s 2010 destination marketing campaign ‘Beyond the 90 Minutes’, rolled out more than a year before the tournament, paid off. We are proud of these figures, and can congratulate our industry on a job done superbly well,” says Western Cape Minister for Finance, Economic Development and Tourism, Alan Winde.

Calvyn Gilfellan, CEO of CTRU, concurs: “We are thrilled that World Cup tourists still had Cape Town and the Western Cape very much on their agenda, despite the province not being the main soccer hub, and we look forward to welcoming them back. We are already implementing World Cup lessons by focusing on new, high potential tourism markets, maintaining contact with influential media that visited the destination during the tournament and rendered powerful international coverage, and by generally keeping destination Cape Town and the Western Cape top-of-mind.”

According to SA Tourism a total of 309 554 foreign tourists arrived in South Africa specifically for the World Cup, of which 32% came from Africa (by land), 24% from Europe, 13% from Central and South America, 11% from North America, 8% from Asia, 6% from Africa (by air), 4% from Australasia and 1% from the Middle East. They spent a total amount of R3.64 billion in the country, mostly on shopping (31%), followed by accommodation (20%) and food and drink (19%).
