The conference is organised by the SARF in conjunction with the IRF, which is based in Geneva, Switzerland. According to Mutshutshu Nxumalo, President of SARF, this year’s conference has been timed to coincide with SARF’s 60th Anniversary.
The City’s Mayoral Committee Member for Transport, Roads and Major Projects, Councillor Elizabeth Thompson, officially welcomed guests to the conference during an opening function on Sunday 10 October.
A total of 250 delegates from 12 African countries are expected to attend the conference, which takes place from 11 – 14 October.
“It is an honour for Cape Town to welcome the conference delegates to our beautiful city. They will undoubtedly be impressed with the flagship projects recently completed or currently under construction – including Hospital Bend, the Koeberg Interchange and the Integrated Rapid Transit system,” said Councillor Thompson.
More than 30 presentations, all focussing on ‘Preserving Africa’s Road Network’, will be delivered during the three-day conference. Sessions will be chaired by, amongst others, Chief Executive Officer of SANRAL, Nazir Alli, and Managing Director of the Johannesburg Roads Agency, Dudu Maseko.
Two post-conference workshops will also be held at the Wallenberg Research Centre at the University of Stellenbosch on Thursday, 14 October, namely:
· Road Safety Solutions for Africa;
· Governance Capacity in the Transport Sector in Africa – a workshop organised by the Global Transport Knowledge Partnership (GTKP)
