FISHING: Petrel's Net Handling Innovation
Recent Western Cape Business News
PETREL Engineering, the Cape Town based deck machinery supplier, has been awarded another order to supply its smaller range of deck equipment, this time for a Gansbaai based vessel owner.
The equipment is similar to that which Petrel recently supplied to a Struisbaai based owner and consists of the Trident TNW576 triple roller nethauler, the NS32 articulated net stacker as well as a PW12 triple drum purse winch with automatic wire guiding gear.
The equipment was specifically designed for the modern GRP hulled pelagic purse seiners being built on the Cape west coast and is based on Petrel’s extensive experience in providing efficient deck machinery to the international commercial fishing fleets.
Innovative new features such as the synthetic maintenance free sheave bushes running on stainless steel shafts as well as easily interchangeable rollers on the net hauler, together with Petrel’s traditional use of stainless steel rather than cast aluminium material for the net guides, compliment these new models.
The basic design of the net hauler evolved from Petrel’s TNW540 triple roller nethauler model, which has been supplied to Norwegian vessel owners operating as far North as the Barents Sea.
Advantages such as reduced net hauling time, the ability to fish in rough weather, less damage to nets and floats and fewer crew in the netbin, are achieved with the Petrel system.
The triple roller net hauler, Petrel model TNW576 has a core pull of 13.2 tons, the net stacker NS 32, a pull of 1.5 tons and the purse winch, PW12 a pull of 11.5 tons.
Petrel is able to offer net haulers with pulls ranging from 9.5 tons to 47 tons. Net stackers range from the 32" sheave model with a pull of 1.5 tons and a maximum stacking radius of 2.6 metres to the articulated net crane stacker with a core pull of 9 tons and stacking radius of 13.6 metres.
Other deck machinery such as fixed and knuckle boom marine cranes, purse, trawl and general purpose winches, anchor winches, submersible fish pumps, vertical and horizontal capstans, together with the required hydraulic power packs and controls, complete Petrel’s range of fishing vessel deck machinery.
