VENTURES: Beekman Canopies Grows Its Business
Recent Western Cape Business News
Beekman Super Canopies, with its headquarters in Cape Town, is now looking to grow its market share in Gauteng and the surrounding areas. A number of action plans have been put in place in this regard already.
“We are one of the three major canopy producers and distributors in South Africa, with an approximate 16% share of the overall market, but until now have concentrated most of our marketing and sales efforts in the Western, Eastern and Northern Cape, where we hold an estimated 35% of the canopy market,” commented the national marketing and sales manager of Beekman Super Canopies, Vanessa Lester.
“Now our focus is on growing our business in Gauteng, the largest canopy market in the country, as well as in KwaZulu-Natal, another important market. The fact that Beekman became a wholly owned subsidiary of Imperial Automotive Retail in July 2008 has given us access to the resources that enable us to be far more aggressive in these areas.
“We currently have eight depots, 20 independent agents and 37 fitment centres countrywide, but the first major project in our new growth strategy will be the establishment of our first stand-alone sales and fitment outlet. It will be located in Randburg,” added Vanessa Lester.
“Most canopy fitment centres are located in out-of-the-way places and we intend making the Beekman facilities more easily accessible and conveniently situated where there are several motor dealership in close proximity as we believe this type of service will play a big role in growing our business,” said the Beekman executive.
“Beekman Super Canopies, which was established in the Western Cape in 1977, remained very much a family business until the Imperial Group obtained a 51% share in the company in 2006, which grew to 100% two years later, explained the company’s managing director, Kobus Stander.
”Arguably the biggest company of its type in SA, Beekman Super Canopies sells more than 16 000 canopies a year and offers a range of 120 models, which includes catering for older model bakkies, as well as supplying accessories and bakkie lids, which brings the total Beekman offering to 145 products, most of which are made at our plants in Stikland, near Cape Town.
“Our quality standards are particularly high and we are registered and approved by major vehicle manufacturers and distributors such as Toyota, Ford, Mazda, Nissan, General Motors and Kia,” continued the managing director.
