SOUTHERN Power Products played a major role in a cooperative effort recently undertaken to bring the 28 metre hake long-liner, the Augusta, up to speed and back to work.
The challenge at hand was to retain the old sterngear and gearbox whilst fitting a new modern high-speed engine onboard the vessel.
The results were good, marrying the new to the old technology to get better performance and significantly reduce fuel consumption.
K&M’s Laser Alignment Services was appointed project manager by Gastao Fernandes, and was instrumental in ensuring the success of the project.
Triton Naval Architects ran computer simulations to determine the correct engine for the vessel. They recommended either the use of the Caterpillar C18 650HP engine or a Volvo D16 601HP option, as both were capable of delivering the necessary torque at idle, and power at full speed.
Finally a decision was made to install the Volvo D16 MH engine on board the Augusta.
The D16 in-line 6 cylinder diesel is specifically designed for installations on heavy duty commercial displacement craft. The high-pressure unit injector system, in conjunction with electronics and an advanced combustion system, aims to set new standards in minimising noxious emissions.
The D16 MH is a further development of the Volvo Penta D12 in-line six concept with robust block design, rear-end transmission, ladder frame and a one-piece cylinder head with overhead camshaft and 4-valve technology. “This contributes to excellent operating economy, high reliability and long term durability,” says Noel Holmes of Southern Power Products, suppliers of Volvo Penta engines in South Africa.
The challenge was, however, to ensure that all the benefits associated with the engine could be transferred to the vessel without changing the existing sterngear, from 40 year old Reintjies marine gear to a 2 meter 4 blade propeller in a kort nozzle.
The existing sterngear and gearbox, a 4:1 Reintjies, had to be coupled to the modern engine via a 2.5:1 reduction gear box in order to achieve the maximum propeller speed of 190rpm.
A DONG-I gearbox supplied by Peninsula Power Products was selected as the most suitable for this purpose.
Sea trials proved that the step down concept from modern to obsolete and the selection of the Volvo engine had been even more successful than anticipated.
The fishing company will gain significantly from reduced fuel consumption, down to 52 litres per hour at 9 knots, and the crew will benefit from a much more comfortable vessel at sea.
Hesper Engineering was called in as a subcontractor, and was tasked with the removal of the old engine and the modification of the base for the new engine, while K&M’s Laser Alignment Services managed the project and ensured that the alignment of the new power unit and the existing gearbox was true.
“The success of this installation proves the viability of a cost-effective option for a number of vessels operating in our waters,” says Holmes adding that the D16 MH installed on the Augusta will provide the owners with excellent performance and fuel consumption.
